Sweet Lola’s

This weekend my boyfriend and I took a trip down to Wausau to get some shopping done for the house, and of course browse around for new clubs for the upcoming golf season. After a long day of shopping we stopped at my favorite cupcake shop (Sweet Lola’s) before heading home. Unfortunately it was in the evening on a Saturday so they were out of the peanut butter cupcakes, which happen to be my favorite. So instead we decided on a lemon poppy seed and red velvet cupcake, as well as a raspberry tart. This afternoon I was trying to think of some creative new project for photography and I decided that this week I will be working on the perfection of food photography. I set out my linen cloth, homemade soft light, and makeshift reflective board. I will create a post later for a detailed description of what equipment I use as well as the link I used to create my soft light.

I took the raspberry tart out of the fridge and got started. Today I was using my Nikon Nikkor 50 mm lens with minimum f/stop of f/1.8G. Although I like how much detail the lens shows when I try close up angles, I have noticed that it is very hard to keep the entire item in focus while obtaining the maximum clarity. It might be user error, but I believe macro food photography would probably work best with a lens like the Micro-Nikkor 40 mm f/2.8G that allows 6.4″ minimum focus and 1x magnification. I positioned the tart so it was angled toward the soft light and captured the image below.

Then Brandyn wanted a candid with the tart because he was so excited for me to be done so he could eat it.


I decided to try my hand at arranging several subjects, and it is not an easy task. When reading other photography blogs it looks incredibly simple.

In order to try and get all of the objects in focus and still maintain a blurred background I increased the f/stop to f/2.8. This is the result

Because the Sweet Lola’s box isn’t fully visible I removed it and took the photo from a farther angle. I increased the f/stop to f/3.5 to try and get more of the objects in focus. This resulted in a darker picture where you couldn’t really see the detail of the goods.

To let more light in I increased the ISO to 400

I will search around this week for some interesting tutorials on how to improve food photography and stack photographs for increased clarity and post the results next weekend.

  1. The lighting and camera set up on the raspberry tart seems to be working; the colors and clarity of the desert is mouth watering.
